The Director of Pastured Housing R&D manages the research and development of newly designed moveable poultry houses. This position will work closely with the pastured live production manager and patent attorneys to secure innovative intellectual property. Will need to plan, budget, and implement projects from beginning to end to reduce both capital and operating costs and meet growth requirements. Assists the VP of Pastured Live Operations to establish their capital budgets and facilitates additional engineering and design resources as necessary.

Principal and Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides a safe, secure and productive work environment for our associates. Manages all construction sites and contractors in accordance with OSHA guidelines.
  • Responsible for researching, developing and innovating moveable chicken houses, focusing on automating and scaling the pasture-raising of chickens.
  • Identifies and develops patentable technologies in the brooding, transporting and growing of chickens in mobile, open floored chicken houses; working with patent attorneys to secure the intellectual property.
  • Reduces live cost by 50% compared to current business model.
  • Provides guidance to the Vice President of Pastured Live Operations and their management teams in developing solutions and budgets for improving processes, maintaining assets, and innovative problem solving.
  • Works cooperatively with Pasture Live Managers, Flock Supervisors and independent growers to optimize the pasture-raising of poultry.
  • Develops specs, blueprints and provides building material lists to enable building houses at scale and at the lowest cost.
  • Manages processes, designs and capital within the created budget.

Minimum Education and Experience

BS degree in Engineering; or equivalent related work experience in Mechanical, Agricultural, Structural Engineering; or related discipline plus 8-10 years related work experience is required. Technical experience in construction, project management, and equipment layout is a must. Poultry experience preferred. Track record in problem solving, negotiating, managing people, and establishing and meeting schedules is required. Must be able to travel to remote facilities and/or offices. Frequent plant and project site visits are required, with moderate travel. Must have adequate computer skills with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office.
